Trips to the hardware store might soon look different. Or at least, less frequent. That is the expectation after Lowe’s launched a new drone delivery option. The retailer has started a pilot at one of its stores, allowing eligible customers to order small project supplies through DoorDash and receive them via Wing drone. The service is still limited, but it offers a look at how a quick hardware store run could change.

What Lowe’s Drone Delivery Is and What Shoppers Can Order

Lowe’s launched its drone delivery pilot in September 2026 at its Matthews, North Carolina, store. Customers place eligible orders through DoorDash, while Wing handles the flight.
Available products include hand tools, paint supplies, tape, batteries, cleaning products, and other lightweight essentials. Lowe’s says some orders can arrive in as little as 20 minutes.
“Home improvement projects rarely go exactly as planned,” according to a press release by Lowe’s. “Whether halfway through a paint project, tackling a weekend repair, or working on a jobsite, forgotten supplies can stall momentum by requiring a trip to the store.”
If an address qualifies, DoorDash shows a “Lowe’s by Drone” storefront with eligible products. Wing drones currently carry about 2.5 pounds per flight, so the service is limited to lightweight items.
After an order comes in, Wing automatically plans the flight. “When a customer places an order, our system automatically chooses a route to safely and efficiently deliver your package, avoiding other aircraft and obstacles,” according to Wing’s website.
At the destination, Wing says the drone checks the delivery area for obstacles before lowering the package to the ground on a tether.
Current Lowe’s Drone Delivery Restrictions
Lowe’s announcement did not include plans or a timeline for a broader rollout. Living nearby does not guarantee access. DoorDash checks each delivery address and only shows drone delivery when the location qualifies.
The delivery site must also have enough open space for Wing to lower the package safely. Customers who do not qualify can still use Lowe’s other pickup and delivery options.
“Any technology we implement is designed to eliminate that friction so our customers can complete their projects quickly,” said Seemantini Godbole, chief information and AI officer at Lowe’s, in a press release by the company. “By piloting drone delivery, we’re addressing a real project pain point with an innovative solution that is integrated into the retail journey, giving our hometown customers next-generation fulfillment right when they need it.”
For homeowners and DIYers, the service is designed for small supplies that can hold up a project when they are forgotten. It gives eligible customers another option for getting those items without making another trip to the store.
