Last weekend, two Family Handyman staff members, both in their 30s, threw out their backs while pulling weeds. That made my editor wonder: if it’s risky for someone that young, is it still advisable for older folks?

“Yard work is consistently one of the top causes of at-home strain injuries in older adults,” says gardening expert Abbie Edwards. “It is such a routine task that people forget to treat it with the same care as a proper workout, but your body does not know the difference.”

Last weekend I also joined the weed-pulling strain club. My pinky finger was the victim. It’s a laughable injury, yet annoying, delivering a sharp pain every time I reach for the delete key.

With the topic firmly rooted I our minds, and in our bodies, we decided to ask a few gardening and landscaping experts about age and weeding safely. Here’s what they told us.

Risks of Pulling Weeds As You Age

As we grow older, our connective tissue loses elasticity, making back and joint damage more likely. It also lengthens our recovery process, which means repeated weeding increases the risk of injury.

Picture a 65-year-old spending 30 minutes weeding, three times a week, says Yoga practitioner Meera Watts. “That’s 90 minutes of cumulative spinal loading per week, and because the tissue recovery window slows with age, that stress builds faster than it clears,” she says. “It’s that repetitive strain that catches people off guard.”

Tips for Pulling Weeds Safely As You Age

  • Keep your back straight. Let your legs do the work.
  • Squat rather than bend.
  • Change hands and positions every few minutes.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Use an umbrella for shade.
  • Use a bench or stool to lessen the repetition of bending down.
  • Pace yourself. Even a few rushed minutes can cause injury.
  • Stop if you start feeling pain or light-headedness. Don’t try to just work through it.
  • Take breaks. Stand and stretch every 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Use tools on stubborn weeds. “Do not pull with all of your body weight, as this can cause you to fall or strain a muscle,” says Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist Clare Spires.

A few tool recommendations to make weeding safer and easier:

Vary Techniques Depending Weed Species

Knowing the characteristics of each weed can also help prevent injury. “Just like with the flowers, vegetables and fruits we grow, weeds have their own variations, thickness and level of difficulty to get rid of,” says Spires. “The more difficult a weed is to be pulled, the more caution you should take.”

Shallow, spreading weeds, like clover, can be raked or hoed, says Edwards, while thorny weeds obviously require gloves. Use special care with plants that have deep taproots, like dandelions. “Those need a steady, straight pull up to get the whole root,” she says.

How Old is Too Old to Pull Weeds?

It depends less on age, and more on your body’s biology, strength and balance. If you have trouble holding a trowel firmly without wrist pain or performing a brief shallow squat without knee discomfort, those could be signs that the risks now outweigh the benefits, says Watts.

But for many older people, there is no real cutoff, says Edwards. “It is less about age and more about how you do it. With the right tools and technique, gardeners in their 80s can weed comfortably. Bad habits, not age, cause trouble,” she says.
