SHAH ALAM, Aug 27 — Police are conducting a detailed investigation into an accident involving a roller coaster ride at the Sunway Lagoon Theme Park last Saturday to determine whether there were elements of negligence or sabotage.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the investigation was being conducted in collaboration with several other agencies, including the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department and the Selangor Department of Occupational Safety and Health, focusing on technical expertise.

“We have held discussions with the agencies concerned and, ultimately, we will cross-check the findings to determine the actual cause of the accident,” he said at a press conference at the Selangor contingent police headquarters here today.

He said two victims were still receiving treatment at a hospital, but neither had sustained serious injuries, while the other affected victims had been discharged or were receiving outpatient treatment.

Elaborating on the follow-up action at the site, Shazeli said the ride had been temporarily suspended pending completion of the probe, allowing the team to conduct a detailed inspection of its physical structure and control room.

Meanwhile, he said police had also recorded statements from several witnesses, including theme park operations staff, ride attendants and the victims involved, to assist in the investigation.

“A thorough investigation is ongoing to complete the relevant information, and police are not disregarding any new leads that emerge throughout the investigation process,” he said.

Last Monday, Subang Jaya police chief ACP Wan Azlan Wan Mamat was reported to have said that 10 individuals sustained minor injuries in a roller coaster incident at a theme park.

The incident occurred at about 9 pm on Saturday, while a police report was lodged at 11.45 am on Sunday. — Bernama
