He was so wrong to put that idea in his daughter's head in the first place.

You have to be so careful about what you say to kids. You can't just suggest that there's a chance that you may go to Disney World next summer because certain kids will remember that suggestion and proceed to ask about it every single day for the next year. It's not as if the kid who asks about going to Disney World every day is some greedy monster who has no consideration for how much it costs to take such a trip. Kids are just prone to getting hyperfixated, and something as exciting as a trip to Disney World is bound to make any 5-year-old locked in on the idea.

Older kids learn that it's not polite to keep asking their parents for something, especially after they've repeatedly said "no." But if one parent says that they can go to the ice cream truck whenever it drives around the block, and the other parent says that they need to ask permission to get ice cream, a kid will easily become bitter and resentful of the parent who punishes them for doing something that the other parent was okay with. Even if a kid has a stepparent, it's important that all the adults in their life get on the same page about which rules to enforce and how. Otherwise, they might get their kids' hopes up about something that would never fly with the other parent.
