“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is getting a re-release with new footage, Variety has confirmed, although details about what’s in those new scenes remain under wraps. A release date has also yet to be revealed.
“Brand New Day,” which launched July 31, was the box office story of the summer. The superhero blockbuster has grossed $2.49 billion at the domestic box office, making it the third highest-grossing movie of all time behind 2009’s “Avatar” ($2.92 billion) and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.88 billion) and ahead of 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” ($2.3 billion) and 1994’s “Titanic” ($2.2 billion).
On Sept. 16, “Brand New Day” eclipsed 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as the highest-grossing domestic film of all time. “The Force Awakens” set the record at $936 million, a benchmark that had lasted more than a decade. “Spider-Man” took the crown after earning $936.773 million in just 47 days at North American cinemas.
The last milestone left for the Marvel-Sony tentpole is to become the first movie to cross $1 billion at the domestic box office alone. “Brand New Day” currently sits at $950.6 million in North America, meaning the record most likely would be out of reach if it weren’t for the re-release.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” follows Tom Holland’s Peter Parker as he tries to rebuild his life after a spell made his friends and family forget who he was. Other cast members include Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Tramell Tillman and Florence Pugh. Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film with a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
