  • One man felt impatient and downtrodden when he and his wife had worked for his parents in the service industry for several years. There had been discussions to split the business between him and his brothers, which had never materialized, and they had also requested higher pay, which had yet to happen.

Feeling the need to make more money, the man decided to start his own LLC doing the same thing as his parents' business. He mentioned this to his brothers, who told their parents, leading to him and his wife being fired from their business. He wanted to know if he had done the right thing.

  • My parents fired me and my wife for finding out about my business

AITAH my parents fired me and my wife for finding out about my business? To start off we were living with my parents initially to save up money for a down payment to get our own home.

  • It got too chaotic we had to leave so we went into a rental home to still focus on saving to get our own home one day.

  • Bills got very tight and we were working for my parents in the service industry and had always discussed about dividing the company between my brother and them and been there for 5 years with no changes although was always brought up in discussion frequently.

  • Upon moving out we asked for slightly more pay as we were down to literally $1 in our account after bills and food and it was very tight and stressful.

  • Kept getting excuses after excuses every month and I decided to make a last minute

  • I started my llc for my own business doing the same work in which from the llc I got a dba so it wasn't too noticeable when finding information.

  • Had my business going while still working for them without any changes going on and it started to get too full on myself to handle both at once but was making it work long days every day to get it done and I had mentioned to my brother's about my business(big mistake I know).

  • They were cool with it for a bit but one of them said something to my parents and then my wife and I were both fired out of nowhere by text message of all things.

  • Couldn't be man enough to even call his own son to have a discussion. I wasn't even mad about it honestly I was more relieved and started pushing harder on my business.

  • So im wondering what do others think about this?

  • Lt-shorts So you opening up a business that is a competition to your parents while working at your parents business still.... yea not a smart move.

  • Brilliant-Camel6354 Original Poster's Reply Well yes and no but I was supposed to be paid $5 more and hour with the experience I have and also to help us and our 4 kids

  • Tinmanwpk Taking a paycheck while running your own business, a competitor no less, was absolutely wrong. You're the AH.

  • Brilliant-Camel6354 Original Poster's Reply But your also misreading about us being stuck and getting no help for more money which I was being underpaid by $5 and hour for my experience

  • ynotfoster How do you know how well the family business was doing? Maybe they were paying what they could afford to pay. The OP went behind their employers back and started a business in direct competition with their parents while being on their parents payroll. Any company would have fired them and if they had signed a non-compete there would be a lot of legal problems to sort through. If they hadn't signed a non- compete, they should have found another job, then quit the family business, then

  • Brilliant-Camel6354 Original Poster's Reply I was never informed on their money situation although was told months before I started the business that he would have more money available after paying off his loans which he said would've been paid off a month or 2 later. Then just excuses or finds other reasons to not pay me more

  • 2ndcupofcoffee If your business succeeds, do you think your brother(s) will ask to join? Your folks may end up retiring and selling their business to one of your brothers or both. Interesting times ahead.

  • Brilliant-Camel6354 Original Poster's Reply Unfortunately both of my brothers are on my parents side and recently told me to screw off so ive not been in contact with them for the last 2 months. Now I did steal customers from him but only after being fired I reached out to some that I was no longer working for him and had my own business. The person they hired in firing me did so bad they called me to switch over so technically didnt steal just reached out offering the same service I always did

  • MarshaMinus100 You weren't man enough to tell your parents. A text seems fair in this instance.

  • Brilliant-Camel6354 Original Poster's Reply Was going to have a discussion with them soon as I didnt want to struggle more getting to that point was just beat to the punch i.guess
