Sarawak Flying Doctor Service operations suspended after fatal helicopter crash, says health minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — All Flying Doctor Service (FDS) operations in Sarawak have been temporarily suspended following a helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Miri, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said today.

In a statement, he said the suspension would allow the relevant authorities to investigate the incident and review existing safety and operational procedures.

“Emergency medical evacuation services for urgent cases will continue through cooperation between the Health Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department,” he said.

Dzulkefly said the ministry would also discuss the possible use of Armed Forces assets to transport patients requiring emergency treatment to suitable healthcare facilities.

The ministry will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the FDS in Sarawak, covering its contracts, governance, operational safety, coverage needs and the effectiveness of its current service model.

“However, the safety of personnel and patients remains the ministry’s priority, alongside ensuring the continued delivery of healthcare services to rural communities,” he said.

The ministry is also reviewing FDS locations and access methods, including safe and practical transport alternatives, and will provide further updates to the public.
