Sabah disaster committee urges public to limit outdoor activities as four districts record unhealthy API

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 1 — The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) has urged the public, particularly vulnerable groups, to limit outdoor activities and avoid strenuous physical exertion after four locations across the state recorded unhealthy air pollutant index (API) levels today.

The committee issued the advisory as hazy conditions shrouded several districts, calling on children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and individuals suffering from respiratory illnesses to exercise extra caution.

“Those who need to go outdoors are advised to wear suitable face masks, drink sufficient water, maintain personal hygiene after outdoor activities and ensure good ventilation indoors,” they said in a statement here.

The advisory comes as data from the Sabah Department of Environment (DOE) showed air quality worsening across multiple monitoring stations as of 8am today.

Kota Kinabalu logged the highest API reading in the state at 171, followed by Kimanis and Keningau at 156 each, while Tawau registered 132. Sandakan was the sole monitored area to remain within the moderate band with an API reading of 91.

JPBN also warned the public against carrying out open burning and advised residents to keep track of the latest API updates and health guidelines issued by the DOE and health authorities.

Individuals experiencing symptoms such as persistent coughing, shortness of breath, or chest pain have been advised to seek immediate medical treatment at the nearest healthcare facility.

The committee added that it will maintain continuous monitoring of air quality conditions across the state to assess risks and coordinate necessary interventions.
