Cristiano Ronaldo has been a cornerstone of the Portuguese national team for over two decades, leading them to multiple international titles, including the European Championship in 2016. However, as the team's star player ages, concerns have grown about his ability to maintain his level of performance. The pressure to deliver is palpable, and Ronaldo's lackluster display in the opening match against Congo has raised eyebrows around the world.

The World Cup is the pinnacle of international football, and the pressure to perform is immense. With a global audience watching, every decision made by coaches and players is under the microscope. The stakes are high, and the margin for error is minimal. In this high-stakes environment, the Portugal team will need to regroup and refocus if they hope to advance in the tournament.

Key Details

Portugal coach Roberto Martínez remained tight-lipped about Ronaldo's starting spot, refusing to confirm or deny whether the veteran striker will start against Uzbekistan. "I can't inform you about the starting 11 because I haven't informed my players," Martínez said in a press conference. This ambiguity has fueled speculation about Ronaldo's role in the team, with some pundits questioning whether the coach will continue to rely on the veteran player.

Ronaldo's performance in the opening match was widely panned, with many criticizing him for missing crucial scoring opportunities. The veteran striker had just 25 touches in the game, a stark contrast to his usual level of involvement. Despite this, Martínez remains confident in Ronaldo's ability to deliver, pointing to his impressive record in big games. "Cristiano is the best one to do that," Martínez said. "The numbers support this of this iconic player who is Cristiano Ronaldo. If you look at the past 32 games, he is the player that has extra movement opening spaces and finding pockets."
