There's no doubt about it, the noise from next door can be mighty irritating and in the worst case scenario, can have a real impact on your quality of life. This is particularly true if, for whatever reason, you spend a lot of time at home. On the other hand, part of living in such close quarters with other people means that you have to accept that you will be dealing with a higher volume from time to time. It is important to make the right judgment on what is normal and what constitutes being an inconsiderate neighbor. The problem that arises is that the line is crossed at a slightly different point for almost everybody.
Parenting an infant is tough enough with any added disturbances, and that is exactly what one woman felt she was experiencing when she complained to her neighbor that her barking dog was disturbing her newborn baby's sleep. She had just moved into the unit, which had been empty for some time.
However, the neighbor felt that the complaint wasn't particularly fair, as the soundproofing in the building was poor, and she felt like her dog did not really bark that often. She also thought it was a little hypocritical, as she often heard the baby crying.
Feeling nervous about further complaints, she wasn't sure if she handled the interaction correctly. She wanted to make sure there were no further problems.
