KOTA BHARU, Nov 1 — Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has yet to pay his RM50 million fine, according to the latest information received by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).

Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said no specific deadline had been set for payment of the fine.

“So far, the information we have received indicates that Datuk Seri Najib has yet to fulfil the requirement as of now,” he told reporters after attending the launch of the Attorney-General’s Chambers MADANI Adopted School Programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pasir Hor here today.

Asked whether Najib would still have to serve his prison sentence as long as the fine remained unpaid, Mohd Dusuki confirmed that this was the case.

On Sept 18, the media reported that His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, had granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.

The order was conditional upon Najib paying the RM50 million fine.

The Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department said the decision was made at the 64th Meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, held at Istana Negara.

In July 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court sentenced Najib to 12 years’ imprisonment and fined him RM210 million after finding him guilty of misappropriating RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd. The sentence was subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2021 and the Federal Court in August 2022.

However, at its 61st meeting on Jan 29, 2024, the Pardons Board decided to reduce the former Pekan MP’s prison sentence from 12 years to six years and the fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.

Meanwhile, on Dec 26 last year, the High Court sentenced the former prime minister to 15 years’ imprisonment and fined him RM11.4 billion after finding him guilty of four charges of abuse of power and 21 charges of money laundering involving RM2.3 billion in 1MDB funds.

He filed an appeal on Dec 29, 2025.

In a civil case, the High Court on March 31 ordered Najib to repay US$1.3 billion to SRC International after finding that he had breached his fiduciary duties, abused his position and misappropriated company funds for personal gain. However, enforcement of the payment order was stayed pending the outcome of his appeal.

Najib is also facing two other lawsuits, one filed by SRC International and another by Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd in 2021, as well as a US$5.64 billion civil suit filed by 1MDB and four of its subsidiaries. All remain before the courts. — Bernama
