Background & Context

Mestiza, comprising Belah Sánchez and Patricia "Pitty" Bernad, is more than just a duo – they are the embodiment of a cultural movement that fuses the rich heritage of flamenco with the cutting-edge energy of electronic music. Born out of a shared vision to create something new and innovative, Mestiza's music is a testament to the power of collaboration and the beauty of cultural fusion.

The roots of flamenco, a traditional form of Spanish music and dance, run deep in Andalusia, southern Spain, where the duo's passion for this art form was first ignited. By infusing flamenco with electronic elements, Mestiza has created a unique sound that not only pays homage to their cultural heritage but also pushes the boundaries of modern electronic music.

Key Details

Since their formation in 2021, Mestiza has been making waves in the music industry with their debut album Quèreles, released in December 2023 via their independent label Sacro Music. This critically acclaimed album reimagines flamenco traditions through a club lens, solidifying the duo's position as pioneers in the electronic music scene. Their music is a true representation of the "sacred" essence of Sacro, which translates to "sacred" in Spanish.

One of the most significant milestones in Mestiza's career was when they became the first female DJ duo to secure a residency at the iconic Hï Ibiza club in 2025. This achievement not only marked a historic moment for women in electronic music but also cemented Mestiza's reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

When asked about their decision to form a duo, Patricia "Pitty" Bernad explained, "We had both been DJing individually for around 15 years, so we each had our own careers, experiences, and musical identities. When we started working together, we quickly realized there was something much more powerful in what we could create together." This shared vision and passion have been the driving force behind Mestiza's success.

On the significance of their name, Mestiza, Belah Sánchez stated, "Mestiza comes from the idea of mixture, which is really at the heart of everything we do. We bring together different worlds: electronic music and flamenco, tradition and modernity, our Spanish roots and a much more global sound. We liked that the name could represent all of that naturally." This sentiment reflects the duo's commitment to creating a unique sound that celebrates their cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of electronic music.
