Kuching man admits snatching mother’s gold necklace, judge jails him seven years

KUCHING, Sept 1 — A food delivery rider was sentenced on Tuesday to seven years’ jail and five strokes of the cane for snatching his own mother’s gold necklace.

Sessions Court judge Musli Ab Hamid convicted Stanley Wong, 26, on his own guilty plea to a charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 14 years’ imprisonment and a fine or whipping.

The offence was committed at the family’s house in Kampung Stutong Baru here at about 10.20am on Aug 27, 2026.

According to the facts of the case, the accused’s mother, 45, was sitting in the living room when he approached her from behind and pulled off the gold necklace she was wearing before fleeing.

The chain was valued at RM1,000.

Acting on a report lodged by the mother, police arrested the accused later the same day, and he led investigators to a location where he had sold the jewellery.

The accused also told police that he committed the act while under the influence of drugs.

Urine screening found him positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Background checks by police also showed he had several prior criminal records, including for drugs.

In pleading to the court for leniency, the accused said he stole the necklace because he needed money to go shopping. — The Borneo Post
