Filmmaker John Carpenter will receive the American Cinema Editors’ (ACE) Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year award at this year’s ceremony on Feb. 6, 2027.
The annual ACE Eddie Awards will be held at UCLA’s Royce Hall, where winners in 14 categories honoring editing achievements in film and TV will be announced. Patton Oswalt will return to host the awards show.
Carpenter’s credits include classics such as Halloween (which became the most profitable independent film of its time and launched a franchise), The Fog, The Thing, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, Christine, Prince of Darkness, In the Mouth of Madness, Vampires and Escape from L.A, among others. He is considered one of the most influential filmmakers in the horror and genre spaces of all time.
“John Carpenter makes movies that get under your skin and stay there,” ACE President Sabrina Plisco, ACE, says. “Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York — these films have scared, thrilled and shaped generations of audiences and filmmakers alike. Few directors understand rhythm, tension and restraint the way he does, and he has always trusted his editors to help him find it. That collaboration is exactly what this honor celebrates.”
Additionally, Bonnie Koehler, ACE, and Christopher Nelson, ACE, will receive career achievement awards.
Koehler has edited 15 feature films and nine television series, and her sound work includes The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Poltergeist, and more. Her feature credits include Heart of Dixie, Curtis Hanson’s Bad Influence, Brian De Palma’s Raising Cain, Shirley MacLaine’s Bruno, and Donald Petrie’s Grumpy Old Men and The Associate. Her TV credits include Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which earned her a 2004 Eddie nomination, along with Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Deadline, The Grid, House M.D., Crossing Jordan, In Plain Sight and Eureka.
Nelson has served as a producer, director and film editor on cable and network movies, pilots, series and feature films. He won a Primetime Emmy for editing the series finale of Lost, and has received nominations for Six Feet Under, China Beach, Mad Men and the Greatest American Hero pilot. Having more than 50 TV movies and pilots to his name, his more recent works include Bates Motel, When We Rise, Waco, The Terror, Godfather of Harlem and Queen Sugar.
“Bonnie Koehler and Chris Nelson are editors other editors look up to,” Plisco adds. “Bonnie went from American Zoetrope to an Emmy nomination for L.A. Law and an ACE Eddie nomination for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, television’s longest-running primetime drama. Chris cut the finale of Lost, one of the most watched and debated hours in television history, and his work on Six Feet Under and Mad Men helped define prestige television. Both have given generously to our community.”
Previous Filmmaker of the Year award recipients include Ang Lee, Jon M. Chu, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Kathleen Kennedy, John Waters, Vince Gilligan, Alexander Payne, J.J.
