Entitled new parents move into mother-in-law's house, get offended when told to pay their own expenses: 'If I was not helping her, she would be homeless'

The truth is that some family members will offer generosity when they do not really have anything to give, and some individuals are more than happy to exploit that. So long as they are getting something good out of the deal, that is fine with them. This is a dynamic that can be especially common in the relationship between parents and adult children, going both ways. One party feels a deep sense of responsibility to the other, who makes sure that they are able to extract from them whatever they please.

These kinds of scenarios can attract controversy from other relatives. They may not like to see a loved one being used in this capacity. The problem is that putting a stop to it is not always easy, and will usually come with some resistance. 

One man was astounded to find that his brother and his wife were paying next to nothing towards their living expenses while living in his mom's old house. They were staying there with their newborn, rent-free, as well as letting the mom pay for numerous other things.

The man felt that this was unfair, as his mom would struggle to live independently without his own financial help, and his sister-in-law was not even working, although she had earned more than her husband in her old job. He told the couple that they would have fewer of their expenses paid for going forward, and they weren't happy. They accused him of wanting them to be homeless, and he wasn't sure if he was taking things too far.
