  • Am I the bad guy for refusing to help my new “boss” after I was the one who trained her 3 months ago?

Im (27F) honestly just numb right now. I have been with my company for 5 years.

  • I started as an intern and worked my way up. I know every single client, every weird software glitch, and Im the person everyone comes to when things go wrong.

  • I have stayed late, worked through holidays, and basically made this job my entire life. Three months ago, my manager (M) hired a new girl.

  • Lets call her "The New Girl." She's nice enough, but she has zero experience in our specific field.

Two higher-ups tell the new girl that she's officially been hired.

  • My manager literally told me, Hey, can you show her the ropes? You are the best we have, so i want her learning from you.

  • So, i did. I spent hours every day teaching her everything i know. I even gave her my personal cheat sheets for our filing system.

  • I thought i was being a good team player and that my manager was noticing my leadership

  • Well, yesterday we had a big announcement meeting. I thought, this is it. Theres been a senior lead position open for months and i have been doing the work for that role anyway.

  • My boss stands up and announces that the promotion is going to... The New Girl. I was stunned.

  • She has not even finished her probation period yet. My boss's reason? He said she has fresh energy and natural leadership vibes.

  • Today, The New Girl came to my desk because she could not figure out how to run the end of month reports (something i have taught her 3 times).

  • I just looked at her and said, since you are the senior lead now, Im sure u can figure that out.

  • Its above my pay grade. She looked like she was going to cry and went to our boss.

  • Now my boss is calling me unprofessional and petty, and some of my coworkers are saying im making the office vibe toxic because i wont help her anymore.

  • I feel like im being punished for being good at my job. Im done doing two jobs and getting paid for one.

  • AITJ for completely checking out and refusing to help the person who took my promotion? TL;DR: I have worked at my company for 5 years and trained a new hire for 3 months, only for her to be promoted to my dream position instead of me.

  • Now im refusing to help her with tasks she should know how to do, and my boss is calling me petty.

  • FortuneElectronic834 NTJ. If she has "natural leadership vibes," then she should have no problem leading herself through those reports. Your boss basically told u that ur 5 years of hard work mean nothing to them. Stop training ur replacement and start looking for a new job today. They are taking advantage of you.

  • Existing_Response239 Original Poster's Reply This is exactly how i feel. It felt like a total slap in the face. I spent 5years building this place up just to be told vibes matter more than actual work. I have already started updating my resume tonight. Im not giving them another minute of free labor.

  • NotMyFaveFood This is your opportunity to look for a new job.

  • Existing_Response239 Original Poster's Reply Yes! Thank you.

  • IndividualSet6057 NTA. Find a new job and leave them high and dry. I'd be willing to bet there's a reason, not work related to why she got that promotion.

  • Existing_Response239 Original Poster's Reply The whole fresh energy excuse sounded so fake to me. Everyone in the office is already whispering about it. Im definitely looking for a new job now. I want to see how fresh her energy is when she has to actually do the work without me. Thank u.

  • Naive-Contact-645 NTJ. Fresh energy does not run reports, experience does. Its hilarious how fast they call you unprofessional the second you stop doing someone elses job for them. Keep ur head down, do exactly whats in ur contract, and nothing more. Let the leader lead.

  • Existing_Response239 Original Poster's Reply Exactly. Im literally just sitting at my desk doing my own work and nothing else. My boss keeps walking past looking annoyed, but what can he even say? Im doing my job perfectly, Im just not doing hers anymore. If she has those leadership vibes then she can lead herself through the manual lol.

  • Emotional-Buddy-8561 Totally not j ! This is a classic case of being too good at ur job to be promoted. They did not promote u because then they'd have to find someone as competent as u to fill ur old spot. It was easier to just hire a face and expect u to do the heavy lifting. Dont give in. If u help her now, you are just proving they can keep disrespecting u.

  • Existing_Response239 Original Poster's Reply This. Its a hard pill to swallow but i think you are right. I have been making their lives too easy for 5 years and now Im stuck because they cant afford to lose me in my current spot. Honestly, Im updating my resume. If Im too good to move up here, I'll be too good for another company that actually pays me what Im worth.

  • Status_Signature6334 They hired her over you when she can't even remember things you have shown her multiple times. They made their choice so now they can deal with the outcome. They knew you were the more qualified person and decided to promote her instead. Do your job and just your job. She can either rise to the challenge of the new position or fail miserably on her own and prove they made the wrong choice. I would definitely start looking for a new job though. Find a place that would appreci

  • Existing_Response239 Original Poster's Reply This is exactly where im at. I used to stay an hour late almost every day just to make sure everything was perfect, but after that meeting? I leave the second the clock hits 5:00. If they wanted her leadership, they can have it. Im already updating my resume. because clearly, loyalty means nothing here.

  • RecipeOpen2606 If I were you, I would be looking for a new job. Continue making the office toxic you didn't start it, but you can finish it.

  • Existing_Response239 Original Poster's Reply Tbh, I already started updating my resume last night. I cant even look at my boss right now without getting mad. If they want her fresh energy so bad, they can have it but they are not getting mine anymore. Im just doing my basic job and nothing else until I find a way out.

  • HealthyWest3357 NTA you taught her everything and now she's reaping the rewards ur boss is the real problem here

  • Existing_Response239 Original Poster's Reply I feel like I basically handed her the promotion on a silver platter by being too helpful. Never again. If shes the natural leader, she can lead herself through the basic stuff I have already shown her 3 times.

  • Feeling-Invite7953 NTJ. Let her flounder. "Fresh energy" will NEVER adequately substitute for actual knowledge, so it's time for your boss to show his superiors that he chose the right person (he didn't, but that's a story for another day), and he will not be able to!!

  • Existing_Response239 Original Poster's Reply My boss is so mad right now, but Im only doing whats in my job description. If she has those leadership vibes he talked about, then she should have no problem leading herself through a basic report. Not my problem anymore. Thank u

  • According_Smoke1385 Training time is over. New girl has to prove her own self now. Nothing personal, just sit back and watch

  • Existing_Response239 Original Poster's Reply Exactly. Im just so tired of being the one who holds everything together while someone else gets the credit. If she's a natural leader like my boss said, she should be able to lead herself through a simple report. Im done being her personal google.
