More and more people are realizing that it doesn't always pay to make your job the center of your universe.

For all that hustle culture has tried its hardest to tell us that being switched onto the grind 24/7 is the best way to live, increasing numbers of workers have figured out that this is not the path that is going to work out for them. All too often, it seems that the only reward for being a star employee is more stress and work, and not enough compensation to make the whole thing worth it. Most companies will squeeze every last drop of productivity out of those who work for them without a second thought.

It's enough to make even the most eager of employees a little bitter, not least because they still feel that they have no choice but to engage in the world of work if they want to make enough money to have a somewhat comfortable existence. It can leave them in an uncomfortable limbo where they have disdain for what it is they do, or the place that they work for, but they are compelled to turn up every day and do their thing nonetheless.

One good thing to come out of millions of vaguely disgruntled workers is that there is plenty of opportunity to turn their cynicism into silly internet humor. Work memes offer a lifeline to anybody who is annoyed by the state of the work in general, but remains a contributor to it anyway.
