The storm never bothered her, anyway.

Have you ever deeply regretted an offer you made for someone else, simply because they took way too much advantage of your generosity?

We've all been there. You think you are doing something nice for someone you care about, only to realize just how easily it is for them to take more from you without so much as a thank you. It often makes us want to avoid offering any help in the future, but we keep hoping that one day someone will take the offered finger without reaching for the whole hand.

In families, this happens almost every time. When you offer a friend or an acquaintance help with someone, they might not feel comfortable taking more than you offered to give, but with families, that is not the case. Family members, especially close ones, don't feel the need to be polite or to fake their gratitude–they will take what you give them, and they will even ask for more.

Take the mom in the story below as an example. While a snowstorm rages across the country, she loses power in her house, without knowing when it might return. Her 31-year-old daughter, who lives a 30-minute drive away, kindly offered to take Mom and her dog in until things return to normal; she even offered to come pick her up and bring her over.

Most people would be grateful and take the offer immediately, but not this mom. First, she refused the offer altogether, claiming she could brave the storm at home. Then, she changed her mind and called her daughter at night to ask her to come over, but was told she had to wait until the morning. The next day, the daughter called to make the offer again, and here was when her mom really tried to take a whole hand, except for just a finger: Not only did the mom want her daughter to come pick her up, she also invited her neighbor and her dog to stay at her daughter's house too, without even checking with her first.

The daughter was shocked to hear that her mom thought it was okay to invite total strangers to her home, and informed her mom that she refuses to come pick her up at all if she plans to bring in her neighbor. Mom, on the other hand, thought her daughter was being immoral.
