The serial killer trackers of Criminal Minds: Evolution are set to work their final cases.
The show’s forthcoming 20th season, and fifth since it adopted the Evolution subtitle upon moving to Paramount+, will be its last. The final season is set to premiere in 2027.
“It’s hard to put into words what Criminal Minds has meant to all of us who have been fortunate enough to be part of this extraordinary journey, first on CBS for 15 seasons and then on Paramount+ for five,” showrunner and executive producer Erica Messer said in a statement. “While suddenly navigating the end of this chapter, I’m filled with gratitude for our remarkable cast, writers, directors and crew who have poured their hearts into this show, and for the incredible fans around the world whose unwavering loyalty has kept Criminal Minds going for two decades. We’re looking forward to sharing season 20 with everyone, and celebrating the legacy of this special show we’ve all built together.”
Criminal Minds ran for more than 300 episodes from 2005-20 on CBS and spawned two shorter-lived spinoffs, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (one season) and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders (two seasons). The network ended the show after season 15, but a year later, Paramount+ revived it with the Evolution tag. Since moving to streaming, Criminal Minds has become more serialized, with story arcs spanning full seasons (which have been 10 episodes each, vs. 22 or more for most of the CBS run).
Criminal Minds: Evolution stars Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler and RJ Hatanaka, with Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster. Hanataka joined the series in its first season on Paramount+ (and 16th for the franchise overall), while the rest of the regulars were around for at least several of the CBS years.
20th Television and CBS Studios produce the series. Messer executive produces with Breen Frazier, Chris Barbour, Glenn Kershaw, Stacey Hardt and Mark Gordon.
