A Teen Takeover, also known as Teen Take Over or Teen Takeover Trend, is a meetup, usually organized over social media or by word of mouth, where as many teenagers as possible meet in a specific location to party and socialize. Teen takeovers have been reported in the media since as early as 2023, often in a negative context due to fights, vandalism and other "rowdy" behavior happening during many of the events. Several of these highly publicized incidents have resulted in heated reactions from social media users in the 2020s, with some, including police departments, blaming parents for not controlling their children.

In late 2025, a 14-year-old was reportedly shot and killed at a teen takeover in Chicago, resulting in renewed interest in the trend. Discourse about teen takeovers had a resurgence on social media in mid-May 2026 after reports that police officers arrested 22 people at a teen takeover at Curtis Hixon Park in Tampa, Florida, went viral, fueled by similar incidents earlier that year that also sparked reactions on social media.

Origin

The exact origins of teen takeovers are unclear. One of the earliest reports of a teen takeover was uploaded to the WGN News YouTube channel on June 27th, 2023, gaining over 400,000 views in three years. The report is about a teen takeover in Lake View, Chicago, where teens were filmed jumping on cars. The report claims that the teens left a "path of destruction," and one witness claims they "heard gunshots" during the takeover.

On June 30th, the 9NEWS YouTube channel posted a segment related to the takeover where an expert weighs in on the trend. The expert claims that TikTok is a big driver for teen takeovers and that it's a result of teens not having enough places to socialize safely, and that teens do this in an attempt to go viral online.

Teen takeovers continued to be prevalent throughout the 2020s. These takeovers are sometimes organized on TikTok. For example, on June 6th, 2025, TikToker @erie.takeover posted a video announcing a teen takeover at a Walmart in Erie, Pennsylvania, that gained over 2.2 million views in a year.

On July 7th, 2025, the WGN News YouTube channel uploaded another report about a teen takeover in Glen Ellyn Pool in Illinois that caused the business to close early.

On November 24th, it was reported by the Chicago Sun-Times that 14-year-old Armani Floyd was shot and killed during a teen takeover at The Loop in Chicago.

On May 1st, 2026, X user @EndWokeness posted a clip of a kid talking about attending a teen takeover, in which the teen's speech is hard to decipher, writing, "'Teen takeover' suspect tries to defend his actions. Is this English?" gaining over 8,200 likes in two weeks.

On May 9th, 2026, a video of a teen takeover at Curtis Hixon Park in Tampa, Florida, went viral online, sparking another resurgence in discourse about teen takeovers. Reportedly, 22 people between the ages of 12 and 21 were arrested at the takeover. The video was posted by numerous users on sites like X and TikTok, including X user @mattvanswol that day, garnering over 5,400 likes and 211,000 views in five days.

The @TampaPD X account also posted police bodycam footage from the takeover that day, gaining over 8,900 likes and 977,000 views in five days. The post shares a quote from police Chief Lee Bercaw, who said about the takeovers:
