Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is calling on Bumiputera entrepreneurs to move beyond small-scale businesses and take control of larger segments of the value chain, driving them to become principal manufacturers, technology owners, and market leaders.
At the 2026 Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Economic Convention in Terengganu, Zahid emphasized the importance of Bumiputera ownership in high-value sectors, particularly in the halal industry. He stressed that Malaysia's strength in halal certification should not be the only focus, but rather a stepping stone towards controlling the entire value chain, from raw materials to marketing and international markets.
Zahid highlighted the potential of Bumiputera entrepreneurs in the food and franchise sectors, citing their quality products and innovative approaches. However, he noted that many of these entrepreneurs face challenges related to costs, operational scale, and standards. To overcome these obstacles, Zahid proposed the establishment of a consortium of large-scale Bumiputera anchor companies to produce critical raw materials, reducing dependence on imports and building capabilities in high-value halal sectors.
By taking the leap to industry leadership, Bumiputera entrepreneurs can not only drive economic growth but also contribute to the country's development and prosperity. Zahid's vision for a more robust and competitive Bumiputera economy is an encouraging step towards a brighter future for Malaysian businesses.
What This Means
The Deputy Prime Minister's call to action has significant implications for Bumiputera entrepreneurs and the wider business community. By focusing on industry leadership and value chain control, Bumiputera businesses can increase their competitiveness, expand their market share, and create more jobs. Moreover, this shift towards high-value sectors can help reduce the country's reliance on imports, promoting a more sustainable and resilient economy. As Malaysia continues to navigate the complexities of the global economy, Zahid's vision for a more robust Bumiputera economy is a crucial step towards achieving the country's development goals.
