  • My 19-year-old coworker showed up to work in flip flops. How is that not a fireable offense?

he showed up late for almost two hours his first two shifts. yesterday, again he texts me if asking me if i could. cover him since he has class till 9, his shift was until 10.

  • my coworker is new. he's young, 19, and still has a lot to learn. he's worked multiple shifts where he has to cut out half way and i've had to cover him.

  • I ask why he wore flip flops, get this, he said BECAUSE THEIR COMFY. how is this not fireable???

  • lickthisbook I would have a talk with him about work standards. I think he honestly doesn't know better.

  • whatdafreak I feel like the bigger issue is his attendance, why do you cover for him so much?

  • Avehdreader Some people haven't learned what is and is not appropriate for the office. I don't want to blame it on a generational thing, but for whatever reason people don't know. I worked summer jobs in high school and college and each was a learning experience - your boss may look at this as an opportunity to teach rather than cut the cord.

  • Mindless-Concept8010 Do you guys have an onboarding process or employee handbook? He should have known better, but who better to tell him than his employer?

  • catladyclub If he was in flip flops they should have sent him home but not fired. I am in HR and this happens occasionally, I send them home to get into proper attire. If it is a repeated thing, we escalate. He is young and sounds like he is going to need coaching. Lateness is a pet peeve of mine. 3 times late in a row would be a discussion for sure.

  • Patrick42985 If I worked with someone like that, my response to them would really depend on how the coworker is as a person. If they're a nice person that's some combination of naive, sheltered and oblivious. I would try talking to them about the importance of being able to commit to their shifts and dressing properly and how while this may be a short term job for them. This type of stuff applies pretty much everywhere. If he was an a h le and was doing it to be more an entitled and had no care

  • expiration-date_scam Standards are better set than assumed.

  • Aggressive Dot5426 I do maintenance work. We wear company shirts and usually some sort of carpenter / work pants or shorts. My ex- coworker wore cheap a sweat pants. Same pair every day. Come summer he cut them into shorts. Frayed edge sweat shorts. And sandles. I told him he's got to at least wear sneakers in the summer. I get how hot it is but this isn't the backyard....

  • Occasion Western2411 The company where I used to work reluctantly started allowing casual Fridays but gave no guidelines. So, of course, this stupid young customer service rep starts showing up in torn pajama bottoms and flip flops. The president wanted to cancel casual Fridays just to over-react and be a about it, but I had my assistant talk to the CSR and explain what "office casual" entails. Cooler heads prevailed.
